Art form(s): Crafts/objects, Ngā Toi Māori
Language(s): English
Based in: Bay of Plenty
Where I'm available:
Bay of Plenty
When I'm available: Due to being self-employed I am happy to cater to the schools’ needs and can work very flexibly with them at any time.

My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

Application to become a creative crocheting, knitting, papermaking, sustainable art and raranga harakeke: I feel completely inspired to apply for this position, as it ticks all of my core values as a teacher with a drive and passion to share and teach all I know with children, families and communities. My ability to enthuse others helps me to motivate and engage people/students to participate and contribute. I believe everyone has something of value to share. Once I become familiar with people’s skills and abilities I am able to assist and support individuals to achieve their goals and fine tune details as a collective. Further I have a special place in my heart for children with additional needs (they often used to work alongside me in the kindergarten setting).

I offer a warm and friendly approach whilst facilitating. It is my easy to get along with my nature and passion to collaborate with students and community. You can access these should you choose me as a creative (please read the character references attached to my CV as they reflect my teaching style from my work colleague’s perspectives). I believe I would be the perfect person to work with you as I’m passionate about empowering and sustaining community-led programmes in regards to creative education. Education is a powerful tool to engage and drive a community to adopt and learn new habits, with the focus on learning and growing together. If we show children how satisfying it is to be creative and how to adopt these principals and apply them in their own lives. The flexible work hours you offer are an additional bonus to me as we live on a lifestyle block that requires a lot of mahi at certain times of the year and I am getting busier with the workshops I teach. I would be delighted to work with local iwi and am comfortable with following tikanga Māori as my partner and my children are Ngapuhi from Hokianga. Please feel free to contact me if you need to know some more information, I am glad to help.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

Recently I taught the art of Raranga Harakeke and this was funded by the Ministry of Health. I have also run many weaving hui, craft groups from private to public. Please see my Facebook page for more information (available on request).

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I have trained to teach tamariki aged 0 to 5 (I have a degree) but have worked also with children from 5 to 14 in school holiday programmes for two seasons. I have done crafty activities with them like felting wool... and weaving fish, papermaking, claywork, cooking, garden-art.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

As a teacher of the young I adore any moment to create with them. Now being self-employed and mostly working with adults, I often miss nurturing the young generation. I have good networks with the schools that I have taught in locally. Please see my CV (available on request). Art and crafts bring a diverse dimension into the lives of tamariki, and I would feel honoured to facilitate this process with all that I know.
