My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

Kia ora I am a qualified registered Teacher, Arts Therapist and have a PhD in Indigenous studies (doctoral research focused on arts therapy programmes in educational settings with 'at risk' Māori tauira. I facilitate my PhD-developed Hauora programme, and an organisation I contract to has been able to fund the first delivery of my ten-week programme in one high school. However, further funding is needed to enable additional opportunities for the programme to be facilitated in more high schools in the Te Tai Tokerau region.

The programme is an expressive arts-based programme that adopts culturally responsive, trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches. It aims to support the development of social and emotional development, re-engagement in education and pathway goal settings for year 10 to 13 tauira. An overview of my programme: 10 weekly one and half hour sessions, it is designed to fit and function within the school curricula and can offer tauira the opportunity to create work that can support Social Science Domain: Health Education and Humanities Health and Physical Education Unit standards Level 1 90971 Achievement: Take Action to enhance an aspect of personal well-being 3 credits (Internal assignment) 90973 Achievement: Demonstrate understanding of interpersonal skills used to enhance relationships. 5 credits (internal assignments) 91097 Achievement: Demonstrate understanding of ways in which well-being can change and strategies to support well-being. 4 Credits (Internal assignment).

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

Researcher, developer and facilitator of a Hauora programme. I have facilitated my programme in educational settings such as Kura Kaupapa, education, training to industries facilities, and mainstream high school. I have a Masters in Arts therapy; I completed ten papers of a degree on Applied Arts; I am a practicing clay artist who facilitates creativity for wellbeing workshops to a local audience in Te Tai Tokerau.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I have two diplomas in teaching: one with children, the other with adults. I have worked for Youth Horizons as a youth mentor; I have worked in a pastoral care role for Te Kura. I have facilitated my Hauora in several educational settings.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

My PhD research focused on arts for wellbeing in education. Both the arts and wellbeing need to be of equal priority as all the other academic-based subjects in schools. This is something I have been researching and campaigning for, for over 15 years.
