My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths):
Kia ora! I am a practising visual artist in Tāmaki Makaurau. I recently completed my Master in Fine Arts degree. My work usually involves experimentation with different materials and textures. I make paintings but also large sculptures and installations.
My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with:
My specialised training is a Master of Fine Arts degree with First Class Honours. I have completed two murals at a local primary school and was involved in a community piano painting project. I was the secretary for an arts group who facilitated a harbour sculpture trail. I was on the board of a community arts council and helped organise art awards. I have received various awards for my art. I also work in film as a set dresser and fine artist.
Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes:
I’m a mum-of-three and get a real kick from sharing my love of art-making with kids. I feel strongly that art is an important aspect of the school curriculum that sometimes gets overlooked. I believe that everyone is an artist, everyone should be encouraged to express themselves creatively and to experience that joy that goes along with making art.
I love encouraging children who don’t believe in their own creative abilities to see that they CAN do it! I have helped create two murals and have done other small artistic projects with the kids at my local school. I have mostly worked with children but am also a personal trainer and run classes for adults regularly. I also taught English to children in Japan and to adults in Italy.
Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice:
I am passionate about fostering a love of the arts, and I think it’s vital for all children to have access to creative outlets and art education. Creativity is so important for mental health and self-efficacy. I really enjoyed making the murals and other projects I have done so far with the children – I put in hundreds of unpaid hours to facilitate them. I think the strongest link between the Creatives in Schools programme and my practice is my enjoyment of experimentation. I’m not afraid to try different things, and I think children’s amazing little brains often lead things in new and exciting directions.
