My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths):

I am a 3rd year AUT student, completing my studies for a Bachelor’s of Communication Studies. I am majoring in Digital Media and minoring in Screen Production. My knowledge from university involves a plethora of skills in different areas such as motion media, television production, and designing for a brief. I have also done freelance work for the University of Auckland. My main area of work involves a professional film/theatre environment where I have taken upon many roles.

I am a mentor for a local high school’s film academy. I pass on my skills and experiences with previous productions I have directed/written and give students hands-on experiences in filmmaking and theatre production. This includes business, postproduction, production, pre-production, writing, acting, animation, and many other areas. I am competent in running productions, lighting design/direction, scriptwriting, acting, and filmmaking. I also have some business skills in marketing. I have experience as a: director, writer, senior editor, cinematographer, and marketing director. Further information is available on request.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with:

I wrote a show that has toured nationally. I am currently completing a Bachelor’s in Communication Studies. I have completed three successful projects and have practical experience in a television studio while at university. I also have ractical experience as a freelance editor.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes:

I helped mentor a group of students (years 11–13) towards running a full production. This includes writing sessions, running brainstorming sessions, editing/acting workshops and hands-on tutorials on how to use filming equipment. During the productions, all teams (cast, crew, front of house, business) are made up of students who I help to facilitate and lead. As a mentor it is my job to make sure my department (crew) on the day of the shows are well looked after and ready to perform.

I also help students by creating spaces that allow ideas to flourish and where feedback can be given and ideas enhanced to be more fit for purpose. For example, it is important for me to get the opinions of the cast and crew involved, which is why I always allow room for suggestions that could make a good idea into a better one. Some themes I have worked on include identity, career confusion, code-switching, financial stability, unrealistic expectations, and relationship building.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice:

Working with youth has been one of the most enjoyable parts of my job. Being given the opportunity to express myself was a big step towards going to university to pursue a degree in communications. I would like to help students realise their potential and help them into exclusive creative spaces, especially students in the South Auckland area, who may not know of these spaces that can help enhance their understanding of the world and work in a professional environment.
