My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

¯â˛\7f ", serif;">I am a cello teacher and music examiner and principal cellist of a local professional orchestra. I am a member of a local vocal and instrumental ensemble. I perform regularly with NZ Barok (Auckland) and OCT Ensemble (Hamilton). I am musical director of several local high school orchestras, including productions of the musicals The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Little Mermaid and Seussical the Musical. I have performed as cellist (tutti) with the Auckland Philharmonia, Auckland Chamber Orchestra, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Bay of Plenty Sinfonia and as solo cello with the Handel Consort and Quire and Bach Musica (New Zealand).

Since 2013, I have presented the music of Arnold Trowell in Hamilton, Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, and most recently Krakow, Poland (2019). I have published research on Katherine Mansfield the Katherine Mansfield Studies and an online journal of the Katherine Mansfield Society Society. Currently I am co-curating an exhibition about Katherine Mansfield to be held from October 2021.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

  • I am a Music Education practitioner for New Zealand Suzuki Institute, including annual workshops and training weekends.
  • I have taught and held workshops and classes cello and bass at a range of intermediate and high schools.
  • I was a conductor of regional schools' symphony orchestra and youth orchestra, including annual school tours and concerts.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

It is always a privilege to support our young people in their creative work and I take seriously the potential of students to reach within themselves, test their potentials, and take a leap into the concert/live music arena. Although the benefit is community-wide, it is their personal interest, at a personal level, youths and adults alike, that can be sustained and nurtured for a lifetime, or lifetimes, to come.
