My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths):
I have experience writing most forms of adult literature, from epic poems and haiku to screen plays and novels. I typically write character driven pieces because of a deep-seated interest in sociology, and I especially enjoy exploring modern themes like identity. I have also begun a primary-aged series of books.
My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with:
I completed a graduate Diploma in Creative Writing in 2009 and have been refining my craft ever since. I’m currently writing my third novel and have written numerous short stories and poems. I belong to two writers’ groups and just achieved second winner in my first Life Writing competition. I belong to the New Zealand Writers Guild and have several connections to experts working in the NZ film industry.
Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes:
I'm a trained primary school teacher and adult and literacy tutor, with several years teaching as a volunteer. I worked for WorkForce producing learning materials and currently work alongside heads of departments in a private school. I also studied Performing Arts for 2 years in the UK.
Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice:
I have had ties to education since I started working at Massey in 2005. I currently work full time as a digital partner designing online courses for students in collaboration with teachers. Literature has been a large part of my life for even longer. Bringing my strengths, passion, and interests together like this would be incredible.
