Henderson North School

Region: Auckland

Art form: Visual Arts

Project name: Who we are - Mural

Creative name: Lucia Laubscher

Project Information

This project aims to provide an art experience that produces two murals on external walls that represent our identity (mural 1) and who we are – our community (mural 2). This will create an environment that enhances belonging, hauora, and learning, and reflects the wide diversity and culture of the school community. The school looks very bare and is in dire need of being brightened up, showing our wonderful diverse culture through our school community which makes us so unique and special.

Being a low-decile school having community input and participation is crucial. The wider community visits and uses our school. We will have the opportunity to show who we are and where we come from. The displays will inspire kotahitanga (as one). It is an opportunity to show the amazing cultures within our whānau.

Students will have ownership of the murals through their ideas, design and collaboration with our creative. They will include their culture and who they are and what is important to them and our community. Students will communicate, design, think critically, research, enjoy artistic experiences and reflect while gaining a rich understanding of the creative design process. Students will gain artistic knowledge, skills, and expertise and our creative will be a role model and leader to work with and learn from.

Consultation with our school community will be vital in ensuring there is a whānau voice integrated in our mural designs. Our mural project aims to deepen our wider school community’s understanding of the pepehā of our kura through their learning. All students will participate which will start with students bringing in a taonga that relates to their culture and identity with an added option for seniors to incorporate their pepehā. We will weave our culture, our community, our moemoea (dreams) in the form of a visual story to be shared with our community, our families and our peers, creating belonging and participation for all.

There will be a blessing and celebration of work once completed.
