Region: Otago / Southland
Art form: Nga Toi Māori / Raranga
Project name: Whiria Te Tangata
Project information: Our focus is encouraging our tamariki and kaiako within the school and the wider whānau to learn about Toi Māori and Tikanga. We will engage tamariki, kaiako and whānau to come in and participate as we learn Toi Māori.
We seek to include te ao Māori inclusion in a fun creative learning environment. We aim to teach raranga/weaving to all the tamariki in the school and be part of the narrative that tells the story of our school, our tamariki and weaving it all together with the wider whānau and community. We will create a weaved 3D art sculpture wall hanging with harakeke harvested from the area, using karakia and tikanga practices. Using colours to create a beautiful river scene that represents our river in our community that weaves our community together.
We will learn new waiata, and the tamariki, kaiako and whānau will be encouraged to use new reo during our classes and outside. Sharne will introduce them to traditional Māori games and instruments like the puoro and purerehua and rakau.
