My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I am a traditional celestial navigator and waka hourua (voyaging waka) captain who founded the [redacted] Educational Trust. The Trust consists of experienced members who are highly skilled in their knowledge of mātauranga Māori and traditional celestial navigation, Māori star lore and Waka hourua, Waka tuarua. A link to my website is available on request.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I am recognised for my achievements in traditional celestial navigation in Aotearoa and the Pacific, and have successfully trained other navigators. I successfully project managed and created the [redacted] Trust. The Trust consists of experienced members who are highly skilled in their knowledge of mātauranga Māori, traditional celestial navigation, Māori star lore and a skipper of traditional sailing waka hourua. We built a fleet of waka taurua and teach sailing waka taurua and provide educational tours of [redacted] and other cultural sites of Hawkes Bay. We also provide professional development for teachers. Links to our website, YouTube and various articles are available on request.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I have three years’ experience working with children and young people delivering education programmes. The age groups we mainly work with are primary schools at our location. If schools are unable to visit we can take in the portable star dome into the school to deliver the Māori star lore programmes. In summer time term 1 and term 4 we also deliver sailing waka taurua in schools programme at the Waitangi basin in the same vicinity of the in Napier. Our main education themes include:

  • Traditional celestial navigation
  • Māori star lore
  • Te tau hou Māori / Matariki - Matariki week-long event / Summer solstice
  • Te whakawhitinga o te Rā o te Ngahuru / Autumn equinox
  • Te Takanga o te Rā o te Takurua / Winter solstice
  • Te whakawhitinga o te Rā o te Kōanga / Spring equinox
  • Link to YouTube site and digital resources available on request.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

We like the initiative and the opportunity to collaborate with schools on creative projects and share our mātauranga Māori – Māori star lore, traditional celestial navigation, and portable star dome and sailing waka taurua.
