I can work in the greater Dunedin area, but am open to travelling further afield if it is funded.
My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)
I am a practising artist and an experienced art educator, and a founding partner of an independent art education initiative. As an artist I work with found objects, lately a series of 'trophies' made from animal horns, antlers and vintage woollen blankets. I exhibit and sell work through a dealer gallery. I am experienced with working with schools or community on visual art projects. Look online for more info on past art projects and the teaching philosophy of the independent art education initiative.
My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with
I am an artist who exhibits on a regular basis, through a dealer gallery in Dunedin. I hold a Master of Fine Arts from Otago Polytechnic Art School. I am an experienced art educator and as a member of an independent art education initiative I have initiated and produced several art projects for schools and communities. Our latest art initiative links visual art with literature for a free-to-schools painting workshop, aimed at Primary Schools, and provides PD for the classroom teacher. We have sought funding for this popular project. You can view more of our art projects and initiatives on our website.
Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes
I am a registered teacher who is a trained Primary School teacher. I have worked in Tertiary as a Senior Lecturer in Art Education at a College of Education, providing art education in Visual Arts to beginning teachers, and PD to experienced Primary Teachers. I have had input into curriculum development at a regional and national level while working in both sectors. Currently I work in various Primary schools on an art project basis, usually very short term. As a partner in an independent art education initiative I teach after-school art classes to Primary-aged children. Recently, I have been developing assessment tasks for a national study of student achievement. I am experienced in working with teachers and schools and negotiating art projects to suit specific contexts.
Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice
I am interested in being a part of Creatives in Schools, because I am passionate about the place of art education in the lives of young people. It has been my experience that many schools miss out on having artists work as part of the school visual art initiatives because of a lack of funding. Payment for artists' time and expertise is often not able to be funded by school curriculum budgets. Creatives in Schools would allow us to get out and about and be paid a sustainable income for providing quality art education for children and teachers.
