Project Information:
Ākonga will connect with their natural local environment, local stories, significant sites and community in an authentic, engaging and meaningful way to enhance our local curriculum, STEAM, REACH values and Enviro School philosophy. Hedgehope ākonga are engaged in a 2-year biodiversity and regeneration project with a wide range of local community and experts.
Students will learn about Māori ancestor skills of carving limestone, while learning about the stories, qualities of rock and species within the forest to develop a sculpture that depicts the natural environment. Blocks will be carved to form a large sculpture that all students co-design and create with our creative. Students will also learn about the ecosystem and complex systems of species in the forest along with characteristics of natural materials. A mural will be co designed and created with our second creative.
Student voice has developed our Forest School Curiosity into a 2-year biodiversity and regeneration project. Students have voiced a wish for increased Arts focus. Our creatives will work with students in the forest alongside other local environmental experts to gain an understanding of the forest and species. Creatives will coach and share skills and materials to support the collaboration of design and creation of a 3D Limestone Sculpture and Mural that will stand on site permanently to enhance knowledge of the area, culture and history. Students will be supported to co-construct the artworks
