Region: Bay of Plenty/Waiariki

Art form: Ngā Toi Māori

Project name: Kura Kowhaiwhai patterns/panels to translate our school Pepeha to our Community

Creative name:

Project Information

The creation of our Kura Kowhaiwhai patterns/panels to adorn our Tuhua building will translate our Kura Pepeha to our ākonga, whānau, community and visitors. With the support of our creative, and  Greenpark School Art and Māori Specialist Kaiako, our ākonga  will co-design a symbolic pattern reflective of our Kura Pepeha to  the front entrance of our art suite building called Tuhua. The  Kowhaiwhai panels will be visible to all and will acknowledge the cultural narrative of our Kura bringing a sense of pride and belonging for our students. The kowhaiwhai panels will link to our landscapes and cultural sites of significance in our local area. This project will begin the process of visually transforming Greenpark Kura in a way that reflects Te Ao Māori and the central values, principles and pedagogy of our learning community.

Ākonga and kaiako at Greenpark Kura will learn that mahi toi is much more than what is just seen; the physical outcome, for tangata Māori mahi toi represents a vehicle to foster and maintain their connection to their wairua, to each other, to the natural world and to the wider universe. We want their newly found skills to widen their knowledge and understanding of using their creativity to create a piece of art that will influence many of their peers.

Greenpark Kura Art and Maori specialist team members will meet with our creative to discuss and  plan the key elements of the project and how they will collaboratively work through to completion.

Project starting: February 2023
