Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Kotuku

Region: Auckland

Art form: Toi Māori / Māori fibre weaving

Project name: He Kahu Korero

Project information: He Kahu Korero is a wananga for rangatahi Māori in a rumaki context to learn through and to connect to the ancient Māori practice of whatu. A group of students (selected by Kaiako and whanau) will learn tikanga and reo about whatu and create a collaboratively woven cloak using contemporary materials. Each participant will plan and weave a section of a cloak which will then be joined together into a full-sized cloak. Students will research and name the cloak then, as is Māori tikanga, they will gift it to a person or organisation they decide upon. The skills they learn through this collaborative work will enable them to complete their own cloak for their whānau (most materials provided). Rangatahi will be supported to co-construct their own kaupapa for the wananga (for example, reo journeys, hauora, rangatiratanga). All wananga will be run in te reo Māori.
