Project Information:
The whole school will be involved in the creation of what will be represented on our pou, maihi, and wheku for our waharoa. This will be in conjunction with a focus on learning about our school Pepeha and visiting those places of significance, as well as the history of our school marae, Te Hiringa.
The project's aim is for ākonga to research, plan and create a Waharoa that will reflect the school’s whakapapa. The goal of these artworks is to provide evidence of Fernridge School’s cultural narrative and further develop a sense of pride and belonging amongst our students. The outcome will be a school a Waharoa (gateway) for all people and communities who enter and leave the school and be a feature of our school environment.
All students will have an opportunity to contribute to the final product in some form. Allowing students to express their ideas will promote and strengthen a sense of identity within the school and also reflect the community they live, work and play. Links will be made to important cultural sites in the area around Fernridge School. All staff and teacher aides will have a trip around the local area to understand the cultural history and connection to our Kura.
The artwork will be a visual expression of students’ research and ideas and reflect our relationship with our tupuna, environment, and community. They will create their own conceptual artworks that can be displayed and discussed inside the classrooms.
Project starting: February 2023
