Blomfield Special School and Resource Ctre

Region: Tai Tokerau

Art form: Music

Project name: Music Therapy in Blomfield School Satellites

Creative name:

Project Information:
The aims of the project will be to give our young people the opportunity to engage in music therapy, but also to help students regulate their own emotions. Our ākonga of all ages are encouraged to have strategies to self-regulate. As Music Therapy is a calming therapy that encourages participation and expression, the aim is that students improve their confidence and have the opportunity to express their individuality through music therapy. The aim is then for students to be able to continue this throughout the school day but also through home life. This may be in a variety of ways including self-regulation, confidence and expression, individuality, etc.

The hope for the outcome is for students to have improved their confidence, well-being, expression and relationships. Students are encouraged to experience music therapy in their own way and in their own time. At Blomfield, our motto is discovering potential - we can only do this through providing opportunities. Music therapy will give students who don’t usually get the chance due to their need, experience in music therapy in a safe, familiar environment - therefore giving them the best possible chance of a positive outcome. For many of our students attending music therapy in another environment can be challenging due to transition issues, coping with new people and new environments, etc. Bringing music therapy to the classroom will give students an authentic music learning experience in a familiar environment.
