Te Poi School
Region: Waikato
Art form: Multi-Disciplinary
Project name: Mahinarangi Murals
Creative name: Wairere Toi: Hinerangi Vaimoso
Project information: The goal of our artwork is to develop a sense of identity and pride in our local history through collaboration and to inspire the community to see the rich history of our area. We want to explore and acknowledge the unique name of our kura and how it is linked to Mahinarangi. Our aim is to investigate her journey and tell her story through the artwork. The murals will bring together, and make physically visible, the students’ research and discovery of Mahinarangi as well as local iwi perspectives. The murals will tell her unique story, will display our identity, and reflect Te Poi as a place of historical significance.
Our creative will work collaboratively with the students to discover the journey of Mahinarangi. Together they will research and ask local iwi for their stories around her journey. They will map her journey, the stops along the way, and gain an understanding of the journey’s importance in shaping our past and present. They will work on designing two murals that depict that journey. The work will provide our students with rich learning opportunities in Te Ao Māori, the arts, and mathematics. They will learn design, planning, sketching, and painting skills as well as scale and ratio, using mathematics in a practical application.
