Project information: This project involves the collaborative creation (between students, teaching staff, family, and the wider community) of contemporary Māori art pieces that reflect the school’s values, local stories, and Māori gods. It will include a combination of Māori symbolism, traditional carving, and painting techniques. These art pieces will stand at key landmarks within the school grounds and become reference points for the teaching and learning of the school’s curriculum as well as wider community iwi stories.
Through this project, the school will visually reinforce key ideologies of the curriculum and iwi. Its benefits will bring about a sense of pride, admiration and belonging for our students. Our creative was born and raised in Tauranga Moana and has strong whakapapa links to our school community. Four generations of his family including himself have attended the school where his three children are currently attending. He is an esteemed artist within Tauranga Moana who carves (wood, stone, and bone), paints, and tattoos.
