Project information: Key Concept: Murals that represent our school and wider community. Ko tātou ko ngā manu, ko ngā manu ko tātou - we are the birds, and the birds are us.
We have a beautiful school with approximately 350 students, 56% of whom are Māori. This project is an ideal opportunity to develop relationships with our community and to give our whānau a voice. We will involve them in the process of design and implementation. Each of our students will be provided with an opportunity to take part in the project. This will provide them with a sense of belonging and create an authentic learning opportunity which will lead to increased pride in our kura.
Four murals will be designed in consultation with our tamariki, staff, and community. The background of the mural will have key landmarks from our surrounding area and these images will illustrate our school pepeha while at the same time providing colourful images of our roopu birds. The mural has influences and inspiration from the birds we use throughout our school. The native New Zealand birds are the way we distinguish the different classes within our school, instead of having class numbers. The native birds are our point of difference, they allow us to connect with our local environment and history. The colours in the birds will provide the colour palette we will draw from for our mural. The murals will be created on high quality plywood using vinyl stencils and a variety of paints.
The mural will be placed at the front end of our school library, a focal point from all areas of the school grounds, most importantly from the front entrance way. It will draw visitors through the school and provide colour and interest to the space for our students.
