Mercury Bay Area School
Region: Waikato
Art form: Music
Project name: Recording and production workshops
Creative name: Dave Rhodes
Project information: Students will learn music recording and production techniques from an industry professional and use these skills to record an album of original music performed by students. Under the guidance of our creative, they will learn current recording techniques, including how to record drums, bass, guitars, keyboards, brass, woodwind, and vocals. They will learn production techniques to get the best performance out of each musician, and to create musical parts that emphasise hooks and create interest in any given composition. In the process the students will learn both technical and interpersonal skills.
The project will be hands-on but will also include some classroom learning to teach basic production, recording, and audio skills. Students will work in groups and take turns producing, engineering, and performing in the recording sessions so that they gain a holistic view of the process. Our creative is a full-time music producer and studio owner based in Whitianga, who has been recording music for over 25 years. He will work with a Māori creative, who is a MBAS Youth Mentor and Apra Silver Scroll nominee, to deliver the program. This will also help us to engage the Māori students from our Poutama programme within this mahi.
Project starting: May 2022
