Region: Hawke's Bay/Tairāwhiti
Art form: Ngā Toi Māori
Project name: Makaraka Logo and Waharoa Design
Project information: For a number of years, we have been developing our kura philosophy and direction in conjunction with Enviroschools and considering Local Curriculum and pūrākau. We have long believed that our current logo doesn’t fit within our new understandings and directions, and we would like to develop a new one. Our focus on learner agency and student-directed learning has led us to want to involve our students and community in this process.
We have an established relationship with our creative and have experienced how well he works with ākonga and staff in developing ideas, symbolism, and unique artwork. A further development of this project would be to include the journey and final product into a carved waharoa for the front of our school. Students will be learning the local pūrākau of our school and learning about Tikanga Māori in relation to Ngā Toi Māori. Collaboration and thinking skills will be fostered and practiced alongside a focus on creativity. This will deepen students’ relationships, pride, sense of place, and ownership of their school environment.
After deepening our understanding about the Makaraka story, history, and values, we aim to first redevelop the school logo. An opportunity to work with an artist in the realm of symbolism and Te Ao Māori will help students, teachers, and community members to understand what we are saying with our logo and values and give more ownership of the design. We will extend this ownership out to the next project where the ideas we have developed will be represented in the new waharoa at the entrance.
