Project information: Our kura, together with the community and local hapū Ngāti Rēhia are excited to strengthen our Mātauranga Programme by uniting the Creatives in School grant together with upcoming Histories Curriculum. “Me tiro whakamuri, kia anga whakamua. If we want to shape Aotearoa New Zealand’s future, start with our past.” Kerikeri Primary School understands the importance of the bicultural nature of New Zealand and endeavour to represent that in our kura including our Māori bilingual unit.
The mural will promote equality while celebrating the identity of our kura and rohe. We are eager to co-create a high-quality vibrant mural that engages our tamariki. We will work together to explore the role of Māori as tangata whenua. The mural will explore how the past shapes who we are, focusing on relationships of individuals, groups, and communities with the land, water, and resources. We will be exploring the foundational and continuous history of Māori with visits to historic local landmarks where the history of the land, river and people will be spoken about. As we learn about the area and its history, we will connect this knowledge and stories with our kura’s pepeha. This will support our local marae, hapū, iwi, whakapapa-based rōpū and mātāwaka to protect, cultivate, and retain mātauranga Māori related to heritage. It is important to our kura that we achieve more and explore the big picture of the Histories curriculum.
Our creative’s high-quality artwork and support will encourage innovation and development of an authentic arts practice and provide opportunities for our tamariki to access high-quality techniques for creative expression
