Whakatane High School

Region: Bay of Plenty / Waiariki

Art form: Multi-Disciplinary / Waka

Project name: Waka Project

Creative name: Jamie Boynton

Project information: The Waka Project is centred around the creation of an all-purpose ‘Waka Hourua’ – double-hulled canoe. This will engage students in the building and sailing of a Polynesian-styled waka, while re-connecting with ancient traditions of boat building and water-craft. Jamie hopes to inspire students to interact with their natural environment, while acquiring unforgettable knowledge and experience as a pathway to achievement. This project aims to enable at-risk year 9 Māori students to participate in an integrated curriculum that explores local purakau, pangarau, and literacy all while strengthening their identity and sense of belonging as they transition to secondary school using a kaupapa Māori lens and framework.

Project starting: February 2021
