Wellington S D A School
Region: Wellington
Art form: Music
Project name: Violins in Schools
Creative name: Liz Sneyd, Rebecca Murphy
Project information: Virtuoso Strings gives children in Porirua an opportunity to explore, learn and perform music that is generally outside of their usual sphere. Students learn to read music, identify pitch, and play violins in small group contexts, supporting one another as they learn. The music they learn to play is a mixture of familiar, contemporary and classical. Students who attend church are able to use these skills to support their worship services. Many students will take these skills with them to high school where they will continue to grow and support the music programmes in various local colleges and beyond.
The music and experiences of this programme undoubtedly enriches the lives of all students who participate as well as their whānau.
Other schools involved: Holy Family School (Porirua), Ngati Toa School, Titahi Bay School
Project starting: February 2021
