Wellington Girls' College
Region: Wellington
Art form: Theatre
Project name: Enemy of the People
Creative name: Eleanor Bishop
Project information: Students will perform a newly created adaptation of Ibsen’s 1882 play – ‘An Enemy of the People’.
Eleanor will work with students to adapt and direct the final performance. With adaptation students get more ownership of the final product enabling it to speak to their current thoughts about the environment, Te Tiriti, cancel culture and social media activism. This production also has creative license to include opportunities for wider student involvement, for example chorus, music, dance and/or production roles.
The impetus for this project comes from the challenges of finding contemporary material for young women that appeals to their new and emerging politics. It provides a strong theatrical structure, meaning they learn, form and craft, while also providing a space for their emerging voices and activism.
Project starting: January 2021
