Waimea College
Region: Nelson / Marlborough / West Coast
Art form: Theatre
Project name: Creative Circus and Performance skills
Project information: The project is a planned liaison between students with intellectual and some physical disabilities, and neurotypical students in two year 9 Enrichment classes. We will teach circus, theatre and performance skills to create acts within the framework of a Māori legend, and perform to various audiences of their peers, whānau, community and local elderly.
The potential educational opportunities are extensive: for an authentic collaboration between neurotypical and non-neurotypical groups of students on a time-bound public performance. This requires scaffolding creative relationship development, taking and assessing risks, negotiating, problem solving, building resilience, setting goals, reflective thinking, exploring the deeper meaning of the cultural legend, personal organisation, learning skills and safe practice, improving fitness strength and flexibility.
Project starting: July 2021
