Waiheke Primary School

Region: Auckland

Art form: Multi-Disciplinary / Storytelling/Street art

Project name: Growing Stories

Project information: Growing Stories is a interdisciplinary storytelling and environmental educational programme which draws upon the principles of permaculture and the kaupapa of the 'Enviro Schools' and ‘Garden to Table' programmes. It's aim is to use traditional stories and storytelling mediums to explore and reinforce the learning outcomes of these initiatives.

Not only will the tamariki, kaiako and wider family have the opportunity to engage in an integrated environmental arts project, but the process will be documented into a resource that will be made available to other kura to use (using teaching videos and online platforms).

Our creative will work with the middle school syndicate using the 12 principles of permaculture as a framework. These stories will be retold, focusing on the skills of oral narration using traditional storytelling mediums such as the Japanese Kamishibai, the Indian story scrolls, the Iranian story panels and Māori mahi whai (to name a few).

Project starting: May 2021
