Upper Hutt School
Region: Wellington
Art form: Music
Project name: What is Music - Puoro o te Awa-kairangi
Project information: Music is a language. Based on this idea, the bulk of this project will be a musical interpretation of the story of ‘Nga Taniwha of Wellington Harbour’. Students will select the instruments and sounds which communicate the mood and action they want to convey in relationship to the legend. Kinds of instruments will be (but not limited to): classroom percussion instruments, glockenspiels, keyboards, guitars, clarsach, ukulele and voice. Musical styles which might be available are abstract, and contemporary. The project will culminate in school and community performances and a recording; possibly a CD, but this will be decided later.
Others working with the tamariki in the classroom, will be whānau, other teachers looking to extend their musical literacy skills, and local iwi from Orongomai Marae.
Project starting: February 2021
