Tokoroa High School

Region: Waikato

Art form: Pacific Arts / Visal Arts

Project name: Kia pūāvai te tivaivai

Project information: Kia Pūāvai te tivaivai means "may the Tivaivai blossom". The tivaivai is a rare and unique piece of Cook Islands art and culture. It is a symbol of the heritage of our Cook Islands students; students who are interested in Cook Islands language and culture. In learning more about themselves, they can learn to appreciate the intricate history and stories woven into the tivaivai.

We want to give our children an experience to grow their confidence and to open their eyes, hearts and minds to being part of something that is precious, beautiful and that will become theirs to possibly use as a family heirloom, as well as to appreciate the time, effort and love that goes into making just one tivaivai.

Students will learn the process of tivaivai; they will design, cut, create their own. They will work collaboratively to assist the tacking of each tivaivai, as well as learning how to tack and stitch their own; to see the importance and value of the tivaivai in a Cook Islands cultural context.

Project starting: March 2021
