Te Wharekura o Rakaumangamanga

Region: Waikato

Art form: Ngā toi Māori / Documentary

Project name: Tāpuhi me Waiwai

Creative name: Te Anga Nathan, Tamati Tiananga, Patara Berryman

Project information: The kura is embarking on a project to restore the mauri of Lake Waahi (the roto). The roto has sustained Waikato-Tainui Iwi since the beginning of time. The rivers, lakes and streams of Waikato Tainui give the people both physical and spiritual sustanance. The historical significance is recorded in all forms of Waikato Tainui history. The water is as inseparable to the life force of the people, as a mother is to her child.

This project will produce a 3 to 5-minute video for the kura to launch and to promote further learning and enthuse next years' cohorts toward the environment as a vocational option. The mauri of the roto is a priority. The project purpose is to tell a tale of the tuna. The tuna is reduced to overcoming obstacles and adversity in order to survive. It will ultimately be a tale of success. We begin to scoffold the history, the modern legacy and the journey in order to build a pathway toward sustainability.

Project starting: April 2021
