Te Puke Intermediate
Region: Bay of Plenty / Waiariki
Art form: Multi-Disciplinary / Mural
Project name: Te Waka o TPI
Project information: The project aim is to plan, implement and create a mural that fosters a sense of identity, community and belonging for the students, staff and community in the form of a visual school pepeha.
The Mural will be placed along the front face of our school welcoming our tamariki, manuhiri and whānau. It will depict the journey of local Māori hapū in a contemporary way and weave into it the many other cultures represented in our school. Our students will be a part of the design of the mural, sharing their ideas with our artists. From the student drawings and their time on our marae our creatives will then develop their vision for the artwork.
The creative process our creatives are undertaking will be mirrored inside the art room with the specialist art teacher. She will work with groups using the creatives as models and influences. Students will create their own conceptual artworks symbolising their own pepeha. These will be completed with the art teacher and put on display inside classrooms and homes. The students will be able to participate in workshops and get feedback and feed forward on their personal artworks.
Project starting: April 2021
