Te Kura o Matapihi
Region: Bay of Plenty / Waiariki
Art form: Ngā Toi Māori / Kōwhaiwhai, whakairo
Project name: Matapihi ki te Ao – Collaborative Mural
Creative name: Stu Mcdonald, Moana Moko Creative Natives Ltd
Project information: The creation of a kura mural that depicts the local pūrākau (legends), ngā atua (gods), creation stories, tāpuna rongonui (prominent ancestors), landmarks and whakataukī (proverbs). The art-forms used in this process will include Kōwhaiwhai and whakairo which will translate the stories and become the metaphorical interpretation of these stories. Tauira will co-design the mural including their goals and aspirations for the art piece and their perceptions of their connections to the whenua, rohe of Matapihi and the Ūara (values) of the kura. These will be used as points of references for kaiako to use in teaching and learning, allowing the students to hear the stories and see them come to life in the artwork. A key aim is to begin the process of visually transforming Matapihi kura in a way that reflects Te Ao Māori and the central values, principles and pedagogy of the kaimahi, kaiako, Ākonga, whānau and hapori.
The Mahi Toi (painting, Kōwhaiwhai, whakairo) will help to reinforce the stories and will bring a sense of pride and belonging for our students. The artwork will link to our landscapes and cultural sites of significance in our local area.
Project starting: February 2021
