Region: Waikato
Art form: Ngā Toi Māori / Tukutuku
Project name: Tuku atu, tuku mai
Project information: Tuku atu, tuku mai is a kaupapa to teach mahi tukutuku to tauira o Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Pukemiro. We see this joint partnership promoting tauira and whānau to research korero tuku iho from their whānau and hapū, to further create taonga tuku iho through traditional patterns and techniques of mahi tukutuku.
The project will involve three steps:
- Wananga Marae: to develop research skills and traditional patternmaking amongst tauira, whānau and hapū to have the ability to design their korero tuku iho through tukutuku. Teaching traditional techniques of mahi tukutuku using contemporary materials in the classroom.
- Promoting the matauranga of local natural resources such as Korari, Kiekie and Pingao working towards creating tupuna tukutuku panels for the whare tupuna Tumoana ki TKKM o Pukemiro.
- Design and create tukutuku panel amongst tauira, whānau hapū, marae and hapori whanui to support the restoration of St Clements Anglican Church in Ahipara.
