Sylvia Park School

Region: Auckland

Art form: Multi-Disciplinary / Visual Arts

Project name: My Tūrangawaeawe

Project information: The project is named My Tūrangawaewae to reflect a place of standing, a sense of belonging, a place to share ideas and a place of growth. The process of making will develop a deeper understanding of the mediums delivered, fully supported by strong Tikanga values. Students will be exposed to opportunities to explore cultural identity through an interdisciplinary approach combining components of print, weaving and installation to address tikanga Māori traditions within a contemporary context. Students will expand their thinking skills by weaving works and compiling multiple layers of colour and patterning, referencing the weaves of Raranga Whakairo.

Through this project students and teachers will work in a creative environment where the opportunity to express themselves by working with their hands and exploring their sense of identity is realised. With our creative’s particular expertise in printmaking and weaving, the project lends itself beautifully to also incorporating aspects of the Maths curriculum. Three components based around visual mathematics will be touched on.

This will be a collaborative piece where all students’ work could will come together to create a large tapa cloth work representing all nationalities within the School. Within the construct of the whare wananga, individual artworks will be displayed collectively as a final exhibition and potentially move to other parts of the school to celebrate students’ achievements.

Project starting: February 2021
