St Mary's Catholic School
Region: Bay of Plenty / Waiariki
Art form: Multi-Disciplinary
Project name: The Journey Project
Creative name: Jessica Newman
Project information: This project is an exploration into mental wellness and how students can creatively respond. The aim is to provide opportunity for students to find their creative voice through the use of different materials and artforms, while learning ways to increase their confidence, improve their resilience and build endurance for life's journey. It is hoped that both the techniques and strategies introduced, will open up career pathways for future creative expression and create long term mental robustness for whatever challenges life brings.
The project begins with the presentation of a story called 'The Journey'. The story uses both visual and rhythmic language to imprint its message and to stimulate thought and discussion about the journey each one of us is on. Through guided group discussion, students are encouraged to share their ideas, opinions and experiences, to learn from one another while maintaining their unique identity.
Next, through creative practice, a variety of artforms will be used to extend and enhance the student's skill base and give them the opportunity to discover strengths and interests that may lead them to later exploring a career within the Arts. These include drawing, 2D and 3D design, poetry writing, stenciling, art installation, sculpting, painting and modelling. Each student will be encouraged to keep a visual diary, recording their ideas, planning, sketches, documenting progress, note taking etc.
The project will end with a planned and organised exhibition for family and other students of the school.
Project starting: February 2021
