South End School

Region: Wellington / Wairarapa

Art form: Visual Arts / Photography

Project name: Connect Photography Workshops

Project information: This creative project is based on photography workshops for children.

This project supports our school charter ideas and puts it into practice by giving our students the opportunity to learn new visual and artistic skills which will allow them to share their vision and identity, learn about the history of their region, and share their work with whānau and the community.

During the workshops, there will be opportunities for children to visit the Wairarapa Museum of Art and History to see historical photographs and learn about how these images portray the history of the Wairarapa region.

The aim of the workshops is to guide tamariki to share their own point of view of their world, themselves, and their school community through photography. They will develop practical knowledge, explore the art-making conventions of photography, and apply this knowledge to create their own photographs and prints. The children will edit and select work together.

At the conclusion of the workshops, the children will work with the local community to exhibit their work. The exhibition would also sell photographic prints from the children, with the koha going back to the school.

Project starting: February 2021
