Mt Roskill Intermediate
Region: Auckland
Art form: Multi-Disciplinary / Visual Arts
Project name: Type Making Tools and Moving Shadows
Project information: The artists will guide classes through lessons, modeling the kind of thinking that real artists do. They will expose students to contemporary art models from New Zealand and overseas, helping teachers to see the potential for a schoolwide approach to art that lets students discover, investigate, develop and respond to art that actually relates to them and their experiences.
The first unit introduces students to the design principles of grids, stencilling, ink and stamps, and involves building basic tools and frameworks to create unpredictable forms. Students will design letters that reflect their own cultural background and collaborate on a class typeface that can then be used to send and create messages. The project will involve a Year 7 trip to Auckland art galleries where students will engage in discussion with staff and see contemporary art in context.
A second unit explores light and shadow in the creation of a moving artwork that utilises digital media. Students will be introduced to contemporary artists who work in cameraless photography and learn the skills of cyanotype printing before incorporating digital printing/scanning and phone camera technology to create moving-images.
Project starting: February 2021
