Mana Tamariki
Region: Taranaki / Whanganui / Manawatu
Art form: Visual Arts / Sculpture
Project name: He Tārai Taiao
Project information: He Tārai Taiao is an impact project designed for wharekura students across all year groups. Students will develop a sculpture based on biological structures found in nature. This enquiry-led process will enable the students to discover the methods and materials used by animals, insects and/or plants to build structures such as honeycombs, nests, spiderwebs and fungi. Students will also investigate pārakau and whakatauki that describe human relationships and whakapapa to the flora and fauna to inform their research.
Students will be introduced to practical skills and influences that they might choose to apply to their project, eg, 3D printing, laser cutting or paper mache and textiles. These sessions will also include field trips to investigate biological structures within the environment such as local beekeepers, Pākaha wildlife centre and local wetlands.
Project starting: February 2021
