Region: Nelson / Marlborough / West Coast
Art form: Multi-Disciplinary / Visual Arts
Project name: Visionary Values
Project information: This project for our whole school aims to explore our school values and to evoke questions and thought about who we are, what is important to us and what we stand for. The emphasis will be around how art, particularly comic illustrations supported by literary stories, can provide insight into big ideas and themes, school values, and our essence of self, belonging, and wellbeing.
Research into our whānau, our location's cultural heritage and local environment will lead to defining who we are. From there, these identified themes can be symbolised in contemporary art in the form of comic illustrations and accompanying text.
The nature of the art has been selected to engage our student audience as they respond positively to comics and cartoons and will thrive at the chance to create their own art portraying authentic purpose. Students will work individually or in twos or threes sharing abilities and will be empowered to create a page or pages of comic illustrations with stories that intwine our values, mission or whakatauki as they see it after their investigations.
As a community long term visual representation of our values we will also collaboratively design and create an outdoor mural that captures student and whānau voice depicting our school values.
At the end of the project students artwork will be displayed in our 'Music Room' open space for a celebration and exhibition for whānau and the wider community. Students will explain the process, their creative choices, and they will complete a reflection on their learning.
