Lyall Bay School
Region: Wellington
Art form: Community Art / Mural
Project name: Celebrate our Cultural Diversity
Project information: Celebrating our Cultural Diversity is one of our strategic aims, and an initiative within this aim is to use community support and resources to have an environment that reflects our cultural diversity and make connections with whānau to develop rich relationships.
To get to this point our learning in 2019 focussed on Tūranagawaewae – Who are We and writing our own cultural narrative. In 2020 we have focussed on Te Haeranga – Our Journey, exploring myths and legends from New Zealand, Wellington, and Lyall Bay as well as myths and legends from cultures within our school. All of this learning has given the tamariki a strong understanding of our cultural narrative. We will be able to take these understandings and express them in murals installed within the school grounds and externally. To be able to share this in an artistic form will benefit both the past, present, and future tamariki as well as the whole community. It means the project has authenticity, bringing to life the learning that has taken place.
Project starting: July 2021
