Art form: Theatre
Project name: Youth Theatre Project
Creative name: Robert Mignault, Rebecca Stubbing, Tim Bray, Katie Querin, Madeleine Lynch, Sara Daikin
Project information: This performance workshop project will encourage Deaf students to work collaboratively with their peers using NZSL, which for many students is their first language. Being able to perform in NZSL will enable them to confidently express and celebrate their unique Deaf culture. This experience will help students to strengthen their sense of identity and belonging.
Deaf performing arts have a long, somewhat hidden history in New Zealand and are considered an important part of NZ Deaf culture. Through this project, we seek to provide our students with the opportunity to be taught in a relevant and authentic context using NZSL to learn a range of dramatic and performance skills so that they can produce a high-quality performance from their own culturally Deaf perspective.
Project starting: September 2021
