Kerikeri High School
Region: Tai Tokerau
Art form: Film
Project name: Narratives of Ngāti Rehia
Project information:
Tenei au te mokai nei a aku Matua Tāpuna
Kua ngaro i te tirohanga kanohi
Me tona rohe otae e tu tonu nei ona tohu
This is I, the descendant of my ancestors
who have all departed
My mountain stands eternal
Mankind passes on
I have many connections to all subtribes
But my Ngāti Rāhiatanga is constant
And so are my land and sea boundaries
This project stems from the vision of our school and aims to increase student engagement and promote equitable outcome for our Māori students, engaging them by using the narratives of our local iwi and hapū as the basis for a collaborative film-based project for our Senior Visual Arts students.
The creative aim is to use the medium of film to produce a series of student-led movies that share the stories of the people and places from the area we live in. Students will visit sites of significance to film scenes and will interview whānau, kaumātua and kuia both on location and here at school. Students will engage in an authentic creative experience, working collaboratively to plan, produce, film, and edit their own videos.
Project starting: February 2021
