Dairy Flat School
Region: Auckland
Art form: Multi-Disciplinary / Garden Design
Project name: Whakaaio Whenua Mindfulness Garden
Project information: We will establish a garden that celebrates the Arts while providing a space for Whakaaio Whenua, peace and mindfulness. As well as sculpture, mosaics and mural art, students will contribute to and enjoy these in a garden that links to our local curriculum and histories. The sculptures will be created with wire and use indigenous plants as part of the sculptures.
The garden will be a place for students to explore nature and art through unstructured play, sensory experiences and structured scientific exploration. The aim is to incorporate our local cultural heritage with a Kāwaha or gateway using local images and design patterns through consultation with our local iwi. The garden will enable us to cultivate diversity; plants in the raised garden beds, heritage plants, Māori medicinal plants, indigenous and threatened species of plants.
Ākonga will have the opportunity to express themselves creatively and have a sense of personal achievement and fulfillment from their creative experience. The garden will be a legacy for the kura. Students will also work with our artist, Eliza, to create individual and collaborative art works.
