Coromandel Area School
Region: Waikato
Art form: Ngā Toi Māori / Multi-Disciplinary
Project name: Toi Māori Whakaruruhau
Creative name: Eric Korewha
Project information: Our plan is to initially work with a group of our boys using whakairo and taonga puoro as a context for them to be introduced to Māori values, ways of thinking, ways of being and ways of looking at the world: working with a Māori male role model who has strong values and deep knowledge and understanding of both tikanga and whakairo. This will potentially be a group of Year 9 to 12 students; initially the focus will be upon life skills, life outlook, well-being, managing challenge, problem-solving; tapping into passion and whakapapa.
We also plan to involve a local man who has been taught by a master carver and is deeply steeped in living a sustainable, Māori-based life whose wider life knowledge and experiences and taonga puoro knowledge will add another positive Māori male role model.
Our tamariki will gain an insight into their specialist creative expertise and their connection to tipuna, taonga tuku iho, whakaro Māori and their place in that continuum.
Project starting: May 2021
