Region: Nelson / Marlborough
Art form: Community Art / Pou
Project name: Auckland Point School - Te Kura o Matangi Āwhio Kaitiaki Pou Sculptures
Project information: Our “Creatives in Schools” project aim is to foster new learning experiences for our Ākonga, kaiako and whānau through designing and making Kaitiaki Pou for our school’s new EnviroSchool Culture Garden in collaboration with a locally-based creative.
Our educational aims are to guide all of the students in our kura through the design thinking process in order to create two bright, colourful, modern, long-lasting and low maintainance Kaitiaki Pou to place in our Culture Garden. This rich learning experience will incorporate learning objectives from Levels 1, 2 and 3 of the Technology, Visual Arts, Te Reo Māori and Social Sciences Curriculums.
After exploring the story of Ranginui and Papatuanuku, the children will learn about the history of pou whenua and also look at modern versions such as those at Wellington Zoo.
The pou will stand in our Enviro School Culture Garden and will represent Rongomātāne (atua of garden crops and peace), and Haumietiketike (atua of uncultivated food). This project will support our kaupapa of empowered students, learning for sustainability, Māori perspectives, respect for the diversity of people and cultures and sustainable communities.
Other schools involved: Enner Glynn School
