Papamoa College
Region: Bay of Plenty/Waiariki
Art form: Dance / Musical theatre
Project name: Student-led Production choreography
Project information: In 2020, a large group of year 7/8 students will be involved in the production high school musical jr. at Papamoa College. It is our vision that many of the dances are choreographed by the students so they have a ‘buy in’ to the rehearsal schedule. How can we upskill our students so they can choreograph the dances to a polished performance level? The aim of the project is to develop students who are sensitive and articulate physical and verbal communicators of the visual art of dance; and who are flexible, creative thinkers able to perceive, examine, and evaluate different points of view. Students will develop an understanding of the basic principles of choreography -specifically the use of dance of elements and choreography devices. The choreographing process will enhance the key competencies as students develop an ability to structure original abstract ideas and to create movement to express them in powerful dance work. Leadership skills, teamwork, and critical thinking skills will be challenged through student group choreography, deep and thoughtfully facilitated discussions, and through exercises intended to expand the dancers’ abilities to perceive, evaluate, and interpret movement
