My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

Within my artistic practice, narrative and figuration are important aspects of my work. My artwork is regularly informed by the written word, be it fairy tales, historical text or novels. My response to this stimuli is explored through painting and drawing often employing the use of the figure with gestural mark making and colour. Representations of animals, a regular feature in my works, are interwoven into the composite arrangement of my paintings. The animals are often metaphors for different aspects of humanity. The perspective of distance, be it geographical or historical, also informs my work. Two recent projects have explored aspects of New Zealand history, namely New Zealand's involvement in WW1.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I hold a Masters degree in Fine Arts and a degree in Visual Communications Design. I have had many solo shows in New Zealand and have successfully toured my WW1 project throughout New Zealand as well as in Israel as part of the WW1 commemorations there. I have also been finalist in many group shows including receiving the People's Choice award in the Wellington Regional Art Review in 2016. I have also been the recipient of 3 different artist residency fellowships within New Zealand. My work is held in collections in New Zealand and overseas and I have been commissioned to do artworks for private and corporate clients, including murals.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

During my creative career I have been the recipient of many artists residency fellowships. As part of these residencies I have facilitated and conducted many workshops with young people. These have been workshops for primary-aged children to secondary school students. Each of the workshops have been developed to appeal to the age group they had been designed for. Some of the workshops have been collaborative projects like Illustrating a fairy tale, mask designing and making, and painting on tiles for a finished collaborative work. Other workshops have been designed to deliver guidance on a specific subject or technique such as portraiture.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

I want to be a part of Creatives in Schools because I think creativity in its many forms is incredibly important in our growth as lifelong learners. It enables us to express ourselves to enrich our lives and to explore. Explore not only through the act of making but also through observation and exposing ourselves to multiple ways of expression. I really believe that being creative can contribute to our personal well-being as well as the well-being of others. I want to be able to share, with our young people, my passion for painting and drawing and for the act of making. We can easily get caught up in the idea of what is 'good' art and what is 'bad' and I'd really like to encourage the act of art making as a means of exploration of ideas. As you never know what gems this act of making can reveal.
