My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I am a visual designer and design educator – my work includes branding, logo design, packaging and any collateral for print (posters, catalogues, publications, data visualisation, annual reports, etc.) as well as website design, social media strategy and management, content creation (writing for the web) and illustration. I have worked as a designer in New Zealand for a number of years and have recently set up my own commercial studio practice. The tertiary education in Design and Fine Arts including leading a Graphic Design department for a period of three years and writing a diploma qualification under the Targeted Review of Qualifications process has been my main career focus for the last 15 years. I am currently teaching architectural communication at Ara Institute alongside my design practice. As part of my Master's project completed in 2018, I have developed a model for supporting emerging creatives and I am planning to incorporate elements of it into my studio's operations.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I have designed and delivered teaching experiences in:

  • Graphic Design – Studio, Business Studies, Design Theory, Design History, Life Drawing
  • Fine Arts – Critique
  • Architecture and Interior Design – Architectural Communication.

I have specialised design training at postgraduate level (Master of Professional Practice) as well as training in teaching and practical experience in teaching, facilitation and design.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I have been teaching young people (16+) within the tertiary environment in the creative industries (Graphic Design, Fine Arts, Architecture and Interior Design) for the last 15 years. I have worked with the Design and Arts College, Yoobee College and Ara Institute of Canterbury.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

I have been involved in creative education for a long time and see value in those skills being used in business context – from illustrators, copy writers, video and photographers through to brand designers and interior and product designers. The creative skills can and do make a real contribution to the local economy and to individuals' well-being.
