Wakefield School

Region: Nelson/Marlborough/West Coast

Art form: Theatre/Music

Project name: Fireflight

Creative name: Lisa Allan, Dan Allan

Project information:

Outcomes for students and ākonga: Students worked in teams to write, produce, and perform a theatre production, learning skills and knowledge specific to their tasks. Post-performance feedback sessions with the audience enabled students to judge the work through its emotional impact and entertainment value and gain insights for improvements. Participating students developed all the key competencies. In performing Fireflight!, children experienced seeing their stories retold in entertaining and thought-provoking ways. Fireflight! helped them to make sense of their experience of the fire and the evacuation.

Outcomes for teachers and kaiako: Teachers gained insights on how to teach drama and stage a production from scratch. Some teachers developed skills in theatre production such as making props, staging, and costumes. Staff experienced how the arts can support our goals of hauroa for our people. Fireflight! has been a key project in 2020 for the school’s goals of fostering co-constructed and student-led learning and closer collaboration amongst staff.

Outcomes for creatives: The creatives developed connections to the Wakefield community, a deeper understanding of the evacuation experience, and how it impacted the children, their families, and the school. It was a wrap-around experience where the artists were able to take the project from start to finish from writing a script, working on acting skills with the actors, to rehearsing and performing. They had a sense of pride in the student and staff achievements, and an understanding that the project was part of the healing process for participants and the audience.

Outcomes for parents and whānau: Fireflight! enabled parents and whānau to reflect on the events of the fire and evacuation. It was apparent from feedback that the audience was moved by the power of the stories enacted on stage and by the children’s messages of optimism, hope, and fortitude in the face of crisis – all important during the Covid-19 pandemic.
