Waitakere College Inclusion Support Centre (ISC) Te Whare Rangimarie was established in 1994 and is a bustling, thriving unit for 50 students. The ISC is supported by teaching staff, teacher aides, and therapists. Weekly circus classes for 20 students with disability at Waitakere College will be held which aim to provide:
- a broad-based education for students with physical disabilities and profound special needs
- necessary support for students to achieve their full potential in a challenging academic environment
- assist students to become independent and confident adult members of the community.
This is a tremendous project that offers a chance for special needs students to take risks and experience something different. The skilled instructors (including a young woman in a wheelchair) will carefully guide our students to try something new. Often our students are scared to attempt anything that is outside the normal routine. It has been a delight to see their eagerness to take part in this as well as watching them develop increased confidence along with new skills.
