Russell School (Porirua East)
Art form: Art Therapy - Visual Arts, Community Art and Craft
Project name: HeART Space
Creative name: Shanti Brown
Project information: This project aims to create a safe and inviting 'HeART Space' for children to connect, develop self-awareness and explore their creativity through visual arts. Well-being will be emphasised in this space from a holistic point of view, where art making encompasses the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of self. It is hoped children will develop confidence in expressing feelings and emotions, develop oral language, and develop good relationships with others in the group. The Russell School HEART values (Honesty, Empathy, Aroha, Respect, Teamwork) will be the guiding principles of this space and link to the key competencies Managing Self, Relating to Others, Participating and Contributing. Students will have access to a wide range of quality art materials and be invited to engage with numerous age-appropriate art techniques. This will allow a high quality of artworks to be produced. Creating a supportive environment where students are regarded as their own expert will provide quality experiences for the students. Reinforcing and valuing the diversity of creative expression sets students up for success and to feel proud of their achievements. Gaining weekly feedback from the students, through discussion and feedback forms, will allow us to gauge whether project aims are being met.
